Five steps to rediscover your passion

by Liz Andrew-Brakeupdated on June 14, 2020March 3, 2020Leave a Comment on Five steps to rediscover your passion

We all from time to time forget why we got into Social Work and Child Protection in the first place. Maybe you’ve looked at the student or new graduate in the office and thought ‘I remember those days’ and then ‘it wont take long before reality hits them just like the rest of us’. Things …

  • Well that’s a wrap (for a little while!)

As you may or may not know I’m nearly 37 weeks pregnant and so am now officially on maternity leave! I’ll be taking a step back from this account for a few months (which I have been lately anyway as I slow down). I’m not entirely sure when I’ll be back but I’m thinking in a few months.

If you’re an existing client, I’ll let you know when I’m back.

If you’re not an existing client but are wanting to know when I’m taking bookings again head to the link in my bio and sign up to be notified when you can book a session with me.

  • Today I'm not celebrating Australia Day, it is a day that is painful for many people and so personally is not a day I wish to celebrate.

Today marks the day that the first fleet arrived in NSW and declared Australia a British colony (although this date is debated). It represents the beginning of the oppression, violence towards and attempted destruction of the culture of Indigenous Australians.

As a Social Worker I have seen how the trauma and ongoing impacts of colonisation continues to impact Indigenous Australian families and children. Trauma in it's many forms does not stop with one family, it continues to be passed down the generations.

Having only lived in Australia for 8 years, I am still learning how I can be an ally and I commit to continue to learn.

There are many great accounts to follow that can give you more information, I personally learn a lot from @sueanne_cultural_consultancy @blakbusiness @clothingthegap @commongroundaustralia plus there are many many more that you can look up.
  • Giving in to silence is hard!⠀
⠀
We often struggle with silence, perhaps we have been taught that silence is not a good thing? But in our work what ends up happening is that we plug silence with our own voice and therefore (often without realising it) disempower our clients. ⠀
⠀
Silence is a vital tool in our work to amplify a clients voice and to help us to truly listen to what is being said. ⠀
⠀
Here are some tips for how to embrace the silence in your work ⭐⠀
⠀
Do you have any more tips you would like to add? Let me know in the comments!⠀
